Jim Shaddix

Jim Shaddix
Jim has been involved with church planting and church planters throughout most of his ministry. His first pastorate was the Arlington Park Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, which he planted with his wife and one other couple in 1983. He pastored that congregation for eight and half years before becoming Professor of Preaching and Dean of the Chapel at New Orleans Seminary. For eleven years in New Orleans he mentored young pastors and church planters in preaching, pastoral ministry and spiritual formations, including some of the most influential young Christian leaders in America today. During that time he also served as the lead teaching pastor on a team that planted The Church at Shelby Crossings in Birmingham, Alabama, a new work sponsored by the Church at Brook Hills.
Jim currently serves as the Senior Teaching Pastor at Riverside Baptist Church in Denver, a congregation which has played an active role in church starts and congregational development across Colorado. In addition to his preaching responsibilities, he focuses on developing leaders through disciple-making and mentoring young pastors. Jim’s experience particularly has equipped him to assist church planters with:
- Planting in view of pastoring
- Planting around the priorities of preaching and prayer
- Developing leaders through disciple-making
- Nurturing the spiritual life of the planter/pastor
- Nurturing the planter's marriage/ family
Jim has a B.S. in Education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama where he played football. He earned M.Div. and D.Min. degrees from Southwestern Seminary (1986, 1992), and a Ph.D. in Preaching from New Orleans (1996). He’s the author of two books, Power in the Pulpit (Moody, 1999) with Jerry Vines, and The Passion Driven Sermon (Broadman & Holman, 2003). He’s been married to his high school sweetheart, Debra, since 1983, and they have three children.
