multi-housing ministry
If there was a way for you to fulfill the great commission that Jesus commanded us to do, without needing a passport; would you want to know about it? Chances are you won’t have to take a bus or plane to get there. You probably could walk from your local church to the nearest mission fields within 30 minutes or so. The mission fields I’m referring to are the communities made up of apartment complexes, trailer, & mobile home parks in your very own hometown. Are you still interested? Then let’s get started.
Hi, my name is Wynn Greene, and I am the newly assigned Multi-Housing Missions (MHM) Coordinator for the Colorado Baptist General Convention. A native of Youngstown Ohio I attended college in Ohio, and completed graduate school in Colorado. A retired Air Force Officer I bring a varied number of life and work experiences ranging from law enforcement, nuclear security, anti-terrorism, information technology, social work, youth leadership development, to purpose driven youth ministry. My greatest passion is encouraging others to reach all of God’s people for Christ by living out a sermon before sharing a single passage of scripture. As Christians, we are all commissioned to be like Christ, so that we can then go and do like Christ. In my opinion, MHM provides me with the perfect venue to share the love of Christ by meeting the practical needs of others on a monthly, and sometimes weekly basis, so that I then “earn the right” to share the gospel with them. In other words, participating in MHM is like going on a mission trip without needing a passport .
I am proud to replace my colleague and friend Eric Boykin who has just recently moved to Mississippi where both he and his wife Wendy are pastoring a local church near his aging mother’s family farm. Eric and Wendy have paved the way and laid the foundation for many churches to send more members from their congregation on local mission trips into the multi-housing communities. Due to their efforts in Colorado my role as the new Multi-Housing Missionary Coordinator is sequential and clear:
Now keep in mind that this mission trip does not end within a 7 day, 14 day, or 30 day time period. Rather, this is a mission trip that could last for several years. “Why so long?” you might ask. Well, here are a few not so well known facts that might just arouse your interest and explain why.
The statistics are alarming! More than 52 percent of the families living in Colorado reside in a multi-housing community. And with the rising number of housing foreclosures in Colorado the numbers are predicted to increase by another 7 - 10 percent. However, of these families living in MH communities only 4 percent actually attend a local church for worship on a weekly basis. This means that 96 percent of residents living in multi-housing communities DO NOT connect with a local church on a regular basis. These statistics demonstrate the perfect opportunity for a mission minded person to engage in the closest mission field to their church or home without having to use their passport. Although it appears that during these challenging economic times most people cannot afford to travel abroad to serve others as missionaries, our loving and gracious God has conveniently brought the mission field to us. Ultimately, a multi-housing ministry through your church can create the conditions for the perfect mission trip.
Our hope is to equip ordinary Christians for extra-ordinary ministry. All you need to do now is pray to see where the Holy Spirit is leading you. And if you feel called to multi-housing ministry then take some action by talking it over with your Pastor, your spouse, or someone within your church and then contact us.
So, if this sounds like a mission trip you would like to go on, or believe that members of your church would like to involve themselves with a multi-housing community on a regular basis, then feel free to contact me by phone or email as soon as possible. My direct dial at the CBGC is (303) 771-2480 Ext 255 and my cell phone number is (719) 359-1370. Or you can send an email to wgreene@coloradobaptists.org and I’ll respond back to you as soon as I can. In the meantime, may God richly bless you as you launch your new ministry in this dynamic local mission field. And you can be sure that we will partner with you by offering planning assistance, other means of support as needed, and above all we will be praying that the Lord of the Harvest will send even more workers to the field to assist you.
